The Palo Alto Community Environmental Action Partnership, a collaborative citywide initiative, engages the various segments of the Palo Alto community to identify opportunities and create and implement sustainable environmental solutions.

Tuesday, August 19th: Palo Alto Parks and Recreation Commission will meet to discuss the Baylands Master Plan. At end of this discussion, they will receive comments from the public on the issue of whether Palo Alto should maintain its own composting facility at the landfill site, or ship green waste to Gilroy. Talk: Reducing Dependence on Fossil Fuels with Solar Thermal Power Thursday, August 14th @ 7:30 PM Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto, Main Hall 505 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto Description: The Green Sanctuary Committee of UUCPA will sponsor a talk illustrated by power point images on the generation of electricity from solar power, to be given by John O'Donnell, Executive Vice President of Ausra of Palo Alto. Ausra manufactures a solar thermal system that delivers low cost electricity at prices competitive with gas-fired generation. The system includes energy storage, providing reliable operation into the evening hours and overnight. Ausra has a contract with PG&E to build a 177 megawatt installation in San Luis Obispo County. A study by Ausra shows that this system can deliver over 90% of California's grid energy with similar findings for the national US grid. Plan to attend this informative event!
"A Taste and a Talk" Series: Simple Tips for An Energy Efficient Design Thursday, August 21st, 2008, Time: 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm Green Building Exchange, 305 Main Street, Redwood City David Edwards of Earth Bound Homes, builder of the highest scoring GreenPoint Rated home (304 points), will describe how to incorporate simple design features that can greatly improve the energy performance of a building. These best practices utilize a whole systems approach to design so that all components work together; this can save 30% or more on energy costs over a conventional building without significantly increasing construction costs.
